Do you Free Camp?
A few years ago I had mixed feelings about Free Camping. Going off the grid, in the middle of nowhere, with the kids, I have to admit, it wasn’t sounding very appealing for me (remembering that I was a five star luxury girl before I discovered caravanning hahaha read more here).
Do you pull off on the side of the road, down a 4×4 track, near a river, on a gravel pit?
Do you LOVE it? Find it creepy? Do you feel Safe?
We would LOVE to hear from you! We are compiling some insights & thoughts from families all over Australia on how they feel about the Free Camping experience…Can you help?
Simply answer these simple questions below:
- How do you feel about Free Camping?
- Do you find it safe? creepy? pure bliss?

Free Camping and Us:
Wayne was keen and started collecting solar panels & 12 volt accessories. I loved our first time! We were with friends and there were lots of people around…however, the first time we went off the grid in the middle of nowhere, I did not sleep a wink! What was I worried about? Did I think that someone could find us? Was I worried if something happened to the kids? I wasn’t really sure. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it…Wayne and the girls LOVED it…so I sucked it up and gave it another bash. Slowly, I grew to love the experience as well – although I have to admit that I do prefer to set up camp where there are others around.
Have you seen our Travel Journals, Caravan/Camper Log Books and Pegless Clotheslines? All proudly designed and made in Victoria!!
We have free camped for about 20 yrs as far away from others as possible.
We were camped in the bush at the back of a parking bay about 18 yrs ago East of Southern Cross WA. There was another van about 300mts away I had our rattling gen and my wife was having a shower in the raw, another van pulled up about 50mtrs away and when he came over I asked why hi wife wanted to be close to someone so I told him the gen would be running until 9pm he left soon after
Thanks so much Terry…exactly! If there is room…then spread out! Love that your wife was in the raw! the BEST feeling…
We have free camped for years with no problems. (Except for dodo’s who want to camp metres away from you in a million acre paddock). It is my thinking that you are probably safer in a van than in a house, any crooks know there will be someone in a van, not necessarily in a house. Also, although I have heard all the horror stories and urban myths, from my 35 years experience as a policeman, mainly at smaller country stations, NOT ONCE did I ever have a report of a caravanner being robbed or assaulted. Not saying it can’t happen, but you would have to be very unlucky. The minimal risk is worth it for the serenity.
We have free camped with the kids in Australia as well as Europe and the UK. Just love the freedom and fun discovering new spots. It is not just out saving money, the congestion of regular parks is not always appealing. A plan to do The Big Lap with a maximum of free camping is on the drawing table…
